Mudrā(Sanskrit) is "spiritual gesture". The physical body is made up of five elements namely - Air, Water, Fire, Earth and Aakash (ether - the tiny intercellular spaces in the human body).

Imbalance of these elements disrupts the immunity system and causes disease.

Deficiencies in any of these elements can be made up by connecting one part of the body with another in a particular manner through Mudras.

When a finger representing an element is brought into contact with the thumb, that element is brought into balance. Therefore the disease caused by the imbalance is cured. Mudras start electromagnetic currents within the body which balance various constituting elements and restore health. The joining of fingers creates an effect on the human body. 

Mudras create an energy field and can be used in healing. The ultimate goal of mudra is a higher state of consciousness. 

In yoga these sacred hand positions relate to the energy flow of a particular meditation. They enhance the asana (posture) and sound current (mantra). Mudras in yoga are symbolic of mantras and send signals to the glands and to a specific part of the brain depending on the purpose of the meditation or yoga set.

 Beneficial Mudras:

Jnana Mudra:
Jnana MudraMethod
Touch the tip of the index finger with that of the thumb. Keep the other three fingers straight.
Benefits:
This mudra is extremely beneficial for mental disorders like insomnia or excessive sleep, weak memory, anger, etc.
The practice of this mudra improves concentration during worship, meditation and prayers. This mudra should be practiced for 30 minutes every day.

 

Shunya Mudra:
Shunya MudraMethod
The middle finger folded towards inner side of the palm so that it touches the root of the thumb. The remaining other three fingers should be kept straight as shown in the image.
Benefits:
It helps in curing ear problems like secretion and discharge from the ear, pain in the ear, hearing impairment or even frank deafness. These benefits can be witnessed on parcticing this Shunya Mudra daily for 4 to 5 minutes.

 

Linga Mudra:
Linga MudraMethod
Cross fingers of both hands and hold them tightly, while keep the inside thumb upright as shown in the image.
Benefits:
This mudra generates heat within the body, removes cough and cold, besides destroying the phlegm.

 

Surya Mudra:
Surya Mudra Method
Bend the ring finger and touch it above the nail with the thumb. Keep the rest of the fingers straight.
Benefits:
This mudra is an excellent tool to remove the unwanted fat and obesity from the body.

 

 

Prithivi Mudra:
Prithivi MudraMethod
Place the tips of the thumb and ring finger on top of each other, using light pressure. Extend the other fingers.
Benefits:
This hand mudra revitalize yourself and cures weakness of the body, leanness and removes the feeling of fatigueness. It makes the body active, bright and glowing.

 

Prana Mudra:
Prana MudraMethod
Touch the tips of the little finger and the ring finger with that of the thumb. The other two fingers should be kept straight.
Benefits:
This mudra boosts the life force and guards the body against diseases. It is extremely effective against eye disorder and improved the eyesight as well.

 

 

Vayu Mudra:
Vayu MudraMethod
Bend the index finger and make the upper part of its first phalange touch the fleshy base of the thumb. The remaining three fingers should be kept straight.
Benefits:
It is beneficial in joint pains, paralysis, palsy, hysteria, etc. The practice of Prana Mudra along with this mudra gives quick benefits.

 

Apanavayu Mudra:
Apanavayu MudraMethod
Place the tip of the index finger on the base of the thumb and touch the tips of the thumb to the tips of the middle and the ring finger, while keeping the little finger straight and spate. This position is called Apanavayu Mudra.
Benefits:
If one immediately resorts to this mudra in case of a heart attack or sudden pain in the chest, it can even avoid an imminent heart attack. It provides quick relief in heart ailments like uneasiness, bradycardia, tachycardia, gradual impairment of the heart, etc. Apart from heart diseases Apanvayu Mudra is highly effective in gas troubles. Regular practice of this mudra cures flatulence, obesity, restlessness of the heart and the entire body. A sustained practice of this Mudra fights accumulation of gas in the abdomen helps relieve uneasiness and gas troubles. This mudra can be practiced for 5 to 45 minutes daily as per individual requirements.
