On the day of Raksha-Bandhan, the sister applies Tilak on her brother’s forehead and resolves thus – “ The way Lord Shiva is three eyed, his eye of knowledge is open similarly may my brother enhance discrimination and detachment to open the eye of knowledge to see the light of Love personified God, leading to liberation. My brother may not get entangled in the dream like world considering it to be real, may he not be having only ordinary eyes of the physical body, may he be far-sighted may he not be the one who gets agitated easily. May he not become happy and unhappy in ordinary events (meaning thereby that may he have equanimity). May he become wise and patient. My brother’s intelligence, glory, fame and brilliance may never get diminished.”
The sister ties Rakhi round her brother’s wrist and offers sweets; the brother becomes very happy. The sister makes auspicious resolves for her brother and the brother has a virtuous disposition towards his sister. The brother should also do something for his sister. Nowadays there is a trend of giving a sari, dresses or some cash but this festival of Raksha-Bandhan does not aim at just giving cash or some gifts. If you have received a good-resolve made by your sister then even you should have an auspicious feeling for your sister – “If my sister faces any predicament or hurdle then it is my duty as her brother to reach to my sister to help her. Along with protecting the sister’s honor, money and food, the brother should also think that my sister may have a sound character and the sister by thinking that my brother may have an unblemished character turn her mind from lust towards Rama (Lord). By arousing the pure love of brother and sister many wars were prevented, which in turn saved many lives from massacres by this thread.
“Sarvarogopshmanm Sarvashubhavinashnam, Sakrutkrute Nashdamekam Yen Rasha Kruta Bhavet.”
“The amulet (Raksha Sutra) worn on this festival protects one from all diseases and evil deeds in the coming year” – (Bhavishya Purana)
This festival is a beautiful occasion to heal broken hearts. Its arrival ends family strife and mutual discord, and power of collective will reigns.

It is a day to cement the ties of affection between a brother and his sister, a day to take an oath to observe complete self-restraint, and also the day when a sister receives a promise of protection from her brother. But there is also a deeper and broader significance to this festival. It is a day when we should make some pious resolves, when we should endeavour to experience the vicinity of the Lord and when we should pay obeisance to the Rishis. Brothers protect the physical and material wealth of their sisters, but Saints protect the treasure of our spiritual wealth.
Excellent disciples believe in the Guru not on the basis of some external miracles or so : but their belief is based on the peace of mind and bliss of the heart that they experience at the holy feet of the Guru. An aspirant remains ever anxious, lest the vices of desire, anger, avarice, etc. should rob him of his spiritual treasure. Therefore , he seeks the protection from the Guru. Raksha- Bandhan is an occasion to remind us of that protection (Raksha).
Raksha-Bandhan is the festival for worshipping the Rishis. This is a special occasion to change the Yajnopavita , a must at the time of auspicious ceremonies, worship of Gods, etc. It is day for introspection, and for performing and concluding Anushtanas towards spiritual self-purification. The festival of Raksha- Bandhan comes with the message of awakening your True- Self.

Why was the festival of Raksha-Bandhan fixed on the day of Shrawani Poonam only?

Why was the festival of Raksha-Bandhan fixed on the day of Shrawani Poonam only?

The festival of Raksha-Bandhan was fixed on the day of Shrawani Poonam only because the Indian culture has a plan for making right use of will power. One who gets sacrifice or worship performed for oneself by a Brahmin priest is tied a kalawa, an amulet for protection, by the priest. This is tied so that one is protected from any dosha or disease affecting one’s body which may hamper one’s power of determination. In the month of Shrawan, the earth gets less sunlight. Therefore, different kinds of germs multiply rapidly which cause diarrhea, vomiting, indigestion, fever and body-ache. Hence on the day of Raksha-Bandhan, Raksha-sutra is tied and resolve is made for the protection of the health on physical, mental and intellectual planes. What a deep psychology and mystery supports the tradition of Raksha-Sutra!
