Guru Seva Of Aruni
In ancient time there was one rishi named Aayod Dhaumya. In his pious ashram many disciple used to stay. Of that one disciple named Aruni was very humble, obedient and interested in service. Once it rained heavily. Guruji sent Aruni to take care of the Ashram’s fields. Reaching there Aruni saw that water is flowing out the fields crossing all limits. Shortly the velocity of water will break the fences (boundaries of the fields) and all soil would be washed away.
Aruni tried hard. He started putting soil at the place where water was flowing out to stop the outlet, but the force of water washed away the soil. Ultimately to stop water flowing out Aruni himself slept in that broken place. With this he stopped the water out flow but had to sleep in such cold water for the whole night. In such way he protected the fields.
In the morning when all disciples went to pay obeisance to Gurudev, Aruni was not in the group. Guru accompanied by some disciple went in search of Aruni in the direction of fields with the call - “ Aruni! O Aruni!”
Aruni heard the voice of the master. His body was shivering from the cold, the sound was drowned, but even then he woke up & offered salutation to Gurudev and asked- “Gurudev! What are your instructions for me?”
Guru Aayod Dhaumya’s heart was filled with love. Looking at the service of Aruni, Guru-tatav (spiritual wisdom & bliss) started flowing upon him. Aruni got the knowledge of all scriptures (Shastraa) automatically. Gurudev named him as ‘Udalak’. Great is the Gurubhakt (devotee) Aruni!
